Description

Over the next week, Sandbox Percussion, composer Andy Akiho, and engineer Sean Dixon will be in residency at PS21 for the recording of Akiho’s 75-minute work Seven Pillars for a commercial release in 2021.

The work, which was supposed to premiere in April at the Mondavi Center in California but was canceled due to COVID-19, consists of seven ensemble movements and one solo for each member of Sandbox. The piece is designed such that each movement flows continuously into the next without pause.

Sunday at 2 pm, our Executive Director Elena Siyanko will introduce Sandbox Percussion in a Zoom event, where the musicians will take you behind the scenes of their recording and post-production process, play some unreleased excerpts from their sessions, and give a sneak peek into the multi-year process of commissioning, composing, learning, and finally recording this huge work. Brain Olewnick, Kinderhook-based new music writer and visual artist will join us as a special guest.

After registering, you will be sent a Zoom link before the event.
