Description

September 4  at 8pm - Ipsa Dixit, Kate Soper’s theatrical chamber opera for soprano, flute, violin, and percussion, a 2017 Pulitzer Prize finalist, blends elements of monodrama, Greek theater, and screwball comedy to skewer the treachery of language and the questionable authenticity of artistic expression. Zachary Woolfe, writing in the New York Times, describes the opera as a “brainily winsome work,” and adds, “While ‘Ipsa Dixit’ is precisely crafted, it wittily and poignantly evokes the process of creation.”

September 9 at 7pm - Savage Winter, Douglas Cuomo’s semi-staged concert version of the chamber opera Savage Winter, a fierce, contemporary reimagining of Wilhelm Müller’s poetry cycle Winterreise, premiered at the Pittsburgh Opera in 2018 and enjoyed a sold-out run at BAM. The concert version was first performed in Houston by Aperio Music of the Americas. Scored for tenor, keyboards, trumpet, guitar, and electronics, with projected images from the original production that add depth and dynamism, the music—brimming with raw energy and emotion—encompasses 21st-century art song, acid jazz, and punk.
